The Akii Bua Olympic Stadium, Lira. Set to cost Ugx.470 billion upon completion with construction work underway about 25% work done as of October 2025.

The construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City has emerged as one of Uganda’s most ambitious sports infrastructure projects, with government confirming that the facility will cost approximately UGX 470 billion upon completion.
The stadium is named after the late John Akii-Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist, and is expected to elevate the country’s international sporting profile.
Located in Lira, northern Uganda, the stadium is designed to meet international standards, including an Olympic-size athletics track, modern seating capacity, training facilities, and auxiliary amenities.
Officials say the project will not only support elite athletes but also nurture grassroots sports development across the region, which has historically lagged behind in major infrastructure investment.

Government representatives have emphasized that the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium is part of a broader national strategy to prepare Uganda for hosting continental and international competitions.
Once completed, the facility is expected to attract regional tournaments, boost sports tourism, and create employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases.
Local leaders in Lira have welcomed the project, describing it as a transformative investment for the city and surrounding districts.
They believe the stadium will stimulate economic growth through improved infrastructure, increased business activity, and enhanced visibility of Lira as a center for sports and cultural events in northern Uganda.
However, some stakeholders have urged authorities to ensure transparency, value for money, and timely completion of the UGX 470 billion project.
Although they stress that proper maintenance plans and community access should be prioritized, so the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium becomes a lasting legacy that truly honors the athlete whose name it proudly carries.
