Adjumani LCIII Chairperson’s Vehicle Set Ablaze in Post-Election Violence

Violence broke out in Adjumani following the announcement of James Mawawi’s victory in the Adjumani East County parliamentary race. Mawawi, an Independent candidate, defeated the NRM’s Dulu Angel Mark, sparking immediate protests from supporters of the losing candidate.
The situation escalated when a group of enraged individuals set ablaze the vehicle of the LCIII chairperson, who is affiliated with the NRM party. Witnesses reported that the car was completely destroyed in the attack, with flames visible for miles. The incident occurred just hours after the election results were announced.
Local police swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order, though tensions were already running high. Several people were arrested for their involvement in the violence, and police cordoned off the area to prevent further damage. Officers urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing that any form of destruction or violence would not be tolerated.
James Mawawi’s supporters celebrated his victory, but their jubilation quickly turned into clashes with those backing Dulu Angel Mark. These clashes, characterized by shouting and stone-throwing, resulted in a tense standoff between the two opposing factions. The police struggled to control the situation as more protesters gathered.
The Adjumani District authorities have condemned the violence, pledging a full investigation into the incident. Local leaders have also appealed for peace, reminding the community that elections should be a celebration of democracy, not a reason for destruction.
Both Mawawi and Dulu Angel Mark have urged their supporters to accept the outcome peacefully and refrain from further violence. Investigations into the destruction of the chairperson’s vehicle are ongoing.
