Nwoya, Uganda; Northern Uganda Tractor Owners, Operators, Mechanics and Farmers SACCO (NUTOFA) has intensified efforts to mechanize agriculture with plans to acquire three tractors to support farmers in Nwoya District.
Accordingly, the initiative aims to ease persistent land opening challenges that have hindered smallholder farmers across the district for years.
Specifically, NUTOFA is securing the tractors through a partnership with Nwoya District Local Government, Microfinance Support Centre and the Islamic Bank under the Local Economic Growth Project.
Meanwhile, Robert Achac Okok, the Chairperson of NUTOFA, said the decision reflects the growing demand for mechanized farming services in Northern Uganda.
He explained that the Islamic Bank will provide a 60 percent grant to enable the cooperative to purchase the tractors.
As a result, the SACCO will offer tractor services to farmers at subsidized rates to expand cultivation.
For decades, farmers have relied on hand hoes, which limit cultivation to small plots despite ownership of large acres.
Consequently, many households have struggled to increase production even when market opportunities continue expanding.
At the same time, Okok noted that more farmers are embracing commercial agriculture across the sub-region.
Therefore, NUTOFA considers the acquisition a timely intervention to address the widening mechanization gap.
Currently, Northern Uganda has 2,391 tractors serving the agricultural sector across the sub-region.
However, nearly half of them, about 1,195 tractors, have broken down, leaving farmers without reliable services.
Because of these breakdowns, farmers often delay land preparation during critical planting seasons.
In response, NUTOFA plans to strengthen cooperative management systems to ensure proper maintenance of the new tractors.
Furthermore, the partnership promotes financial inclusion while encouraging accountability among stakeholders in agricultural development.
Ultimately, the tractors will increase acreage under cultivation and raise household incomes in Nwoya District.
By prioritizing mechanization, NUTOFA seeks to transform subsistence farming into sustainable agribusiness for farmers across Northern Uganda.
