A devastating lightning strike has claimed the life of a teacher and injured sixteen pupils at a primary school in Oyam District, sending shockwaves across the community and leaving residents in deep grief.

Meanwhile, the tragedy unfolded Tuesday afternoon at Global View Primary School in Nora Village, Kamdini Sub-county, during a heavy downpour.

As dark clouds gathered above the compound, learners and teachers sheltered inside classrooms to escape the storm.

At approximately 3:00pm on February 17, 2026, lightning struck the school premises with terrifying force.

Consequently, a teacher identified as Joseph suffered fatal injuries as colleagues shouted for urgent assistance.

Thereafter, staff members and nearby residents rushed him to Atapara Hospital hoping doctors could save him.

Unfortunately, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival after desperate attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Simultaneously, sixteen pupils sustained injuries during the strike, sparking panic among teachers and community members.

Immediately, health workers at Diicunyi Health Centre III admitted the pupils and administered emergency treatment.

Additionally, another teacher, Otim Jimmy, sustained injuries and later sought further medical care at Atapara Hospital.

Shortly afterward, officers from Kamdini Police Station responded swiftly after receiving distress calls from school authorities.

Specifically, Sgt. Akena drove police vehicle UP 9771 under Sgt. Opira’s supervision to coordinate evacuations.

Furthermore, police officers coordinated with health workers and administrators to control crowds and streamline emergency response efforts.

Subsequently, investigators launched inquiries to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the lightning strike.

Currently, detectives continue gathering statements from witnesses while compiling detailed reports about the injured pupils and deceased teacher.

Notably, lightning strikes frequently hit northern Uganda during rainy seasons, exposing rural schools that lack protective infrastructure.

Consequently, authorities urge administrators to install lightning arresters and strengthen safety systems in vulnerable schools.

Ultimately, as the community mourns Joseph’s death, local leaders demand stronger disaster preparedness measures and improved infrastructure.
