Two people were confirmed dead and several others injured following a serious road accident that happened in Namokora yesterday morning.
The crash occurred in the Wii-Gweng area of Namokora Town Council when a silver Toyota Noah, registration number UA 602 BU, overturned while transporting passengers between local communities during celebrations. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Orom to Ayul, carrying people heading to a traditional marriage ceremony.
According to survivors at the scene, the driver fled immediately after the accident. Witnesses alleged that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, as the journey was undertaken during late hours. Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash and to trace the driver who escaped.
Emergency response efforts were hampered by the absence of an ambulance, which had reportedly been dispatched to Kitgum Town to transport another patient at the time. This delay raised concern among residents, who criticized the limited emergency services available in rural communities.
In response, Good Samaritans intervened, using private vehicles and motorcycles to rush the injured victims and transport the bodies to Namokora Health Centre IV. Medical workers at the facility provided emergency care to survivors amid scenes of shock, panic, grief, and confusion.
Namokora Town Council LCIII Chairperson, Nyero Kenneth Nyok-cek, confirmed the incident and highlighted the challenges facing timely emergency response in remote areas, including inadequate ambulances and poor road conditions.
Kitgum Resident District Commissioner, Jimmy Ebil Ssegawa, described the accident as unfortunate and urged motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations. He specifically warned against alcohol- and drug-impaired driving, noting that such behavior continues to cause preventable crashes across the country.
Community members mourned the deceased while calling for improved road safety enforcement and faster emergency response services. Authorities have appealed to witnesses to cooperate with investigators, emphasizing responsibility, caution, and respect for human life on the roads.
