A Y.Y. Bus Services vehicle, registration UBF 807D, en route to Arua, crashed near Luwero on Sunday Morning at 12:30am-1:00am around midnight along the Kampala highway.
Eyewitnesses said the driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming truck that was dangerously overtaking another vehicle. As a result, the bus left its lane, veered off the road, and plunged into roadside vegetation during dusk.
Police in Luwero confirmed that the crash occurred on the Kampala–Gulu highway, triggering panic among passengers and nearby residents. Several passengers sustained injuries, while others escaped unharmed, according to preliminary information gathered by first responders at the chaotic scene.

Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby health facilities, and traffic slowed significantly along the busy corridor for several hours. Meanwhile, anxious relatives flooded phone lines and social media platforms as they searched for updates on loved ones traveling from Kampala to West Nile.
Police launched investigations to establish the truck driver’s actions and determine responsibility for the reported dangerous maneuver. Road safety advocates warned that reckless overtaking remains common, especially on highways with heavy evening traffic and limited visibility.
Authorities urged motorists to exercise patience, obey traffic rules, and avoid risky maneuvers that endanger lives during peak travel hours. Y.Y. Bus Services said it is cooperating with police and supporting affected passengers and their families.
Medical officials reported that most injured passengers remain in stable condition, although some continue under observation at local hospitals overnight. Emergency teams also provided counseling and assistance to affected travelers.
The crash highlights the daily dangers public transport operators face on narrow roads shared with impatient drivers nationwide. Authorities advised the public to stay calm, verify information, and rely on official communication channels for confirmed updates.
Traffic police worked late into the night to clear the scene, restore movement, and ensure safety for stranded motorists. Officials again urged travelers to prioritize safety and check on loved ones when undertaking long-distance journeys across Uganda.
