Government Rolls Out 85 Million Coffee Seedlings to Boost Production and Household Incomes

Kampala, Uganda — The government has scaled up efforts to strengthen Uganda’s coffee sector by distributing more than 85 million seedlings to farmers nationwide.
Nationwide Coffee Seedling Distribution Gains Momentum
Recently, the government distributed over 85 million coffee seedlings to farmers across major growing regions. Consequently, the exercise covered Elgon, West Nile, Rwenzori, Northern, Greater Masaka, South Western, Eastern, and Central Uganda. Moreover, officials described the initiative as a key step toward increasing national coffee production and improving rural incomes.
At the same time, authorities prioritized regions with strong production potential and growing market demand. As a result, the program directly supports national targets for export growth and agricultural transformation.
Smallholder Farmers Take Center Stage
Importantly, the distribution focused on smallholder farmers, who drive most of Uganda’s coffee output. Therefore, the program seeks to improve productivity while expanding acreage under coffee cultivation. Additionally, officials emphasized that increased access to quality seedlings will help farmers replace old trees and establish new plantations.
Meanwhile, agricultural extension officers actively engaged farmers during the rollout. Consequently, farmers received guidance on proper planting techniques, spacing, and early crop management practices.
Climate-Resilient Farming Practices Encouraged
Furthermore, the government linked seedling distribution to climate-smart agriculture. Thus, officials encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable practices that protect soil moisture and reduce climate risks. In particular, farmers were advised to mulch, conserve water, and manage shade effectively.
Similarly, authorities urged beneficiaries to protect young seedlings from pests, livestock, and prolonged dry spells. As a result, improved survival rates are expected to support long-term productivity.
Coffee Farming Positioned to Raise Household Incomes
Likewise, leaders highlighted coffee as a strategic crop for boosting household incomes and rural employment. Therefore, higher production levels are expected to increase farmer earnings and strengthen local economies. Moreover, officials noted that stronger output will enhance Uganda’s competitiveness in international coffee markets.
At the same time, the government reminded farmers that success depends on commitment and proper field management. Consequently, continuous training and follow-up will remain a priority.
Sustaining Growth in the Coffee Sector
Ultimately, the seedling initiative represents a long-term investment in the coffee sector’s sustainability. Accordingly, the government plans to monitor progress through local authorities and extension services. In conclusion, officials reaffirmed that empowering smallholder farmers remains central to Uganda’s agricultural development strategy.
