During the 49th commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum at Mucwini Ceremonial Grounds, Kitgum leaders renewed calls for accelerated district transformation.

While presenting the district status report, LC5 Chairperson Christopher Arwai Obol outlined urgent priorities shaping Kitgum’s social and economic future.

Notably, he emphasized rapid development of the Janani Luwum Memorial Site to match the Archbishop’s national and global stature.

Indeed, Obol described Luwum as a towering symbol of faith, courage, and moral conviction whose legacy defines Acholi’s spiritual identity.

Consequently, he argued that a modern memorial complex will attract pilgrims, stimulate religious tourism, and generate sustainable employment opportunities.

Furthermore, he explained that improved infrastructure at Mucwini will unlock enterprise growth for youth and women entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, he noted that the current memorial infrastructure fails to reflect Luwum’s enduring international recognition.

Equally important, Obol raised concerns over renewed cattle rustling incidents linked to Karamojong warriors destabilizing border communities.

Specifically, he appealed for sustained security deployments and coordinated intelligence operations to safeguard livestock-dependent households across vulnerable sub-counties.

Subsequently, he stressed that protecting cattle farmers shields household incomes and strengthens rural economic resilience.

In addition, the Chairperson highlighted urgent expansion of university and tertiary education services across East Acholi districts.

Accordingly, he maintained that accessible higher education will equip young people with practical skills for regional industrialization.

Moreover, he linked increased university enrollment to reduced unemployment, innovation growth, and long-term socioeconomic transformation.

At the same time, he reaffirmed the district’s readiness to collaborate with central government and development partners on strategic investments.

Similarly, he encouraged stakeholders to preserve Luwum’s legacy as a unifying national figure transcending political and ethnic divisions.

Importantly, thousands of pilgrims gathered at Mucwini to honor the martyrdom and spiritual courage of Archbishop Luwum.

Thereafter, national leaders and clergy reflected on the Archbishop’s sacrifice and its continuing influence on Uganda’s moral conscience.

Ultimately, Obol urged collective action to secure Kitgum’s future while safeguarding the powerful heritage entrusted to Acholi by Janani Luwum.
