Dr. Gilbert Olanya, the Member of Parliament for Kilak South in Amuru District, has credited the high voter support for President Yoweri Museveni in the Acholi sub-region to his strong candidacy. Olanya shared these remarks while addressing journalists at the Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) earlier today. He pointed out that in the absence of a local presidential candidate from Northern Uganda, many voters in the region saw Museveni as the best choice.

Olanya emphasized that the lack of viable alternatives from the sub-region played a significant role in this support for Museveni. In the past, the Acholi sub-region has seen prominent politicians such as Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party (DP) and Olara Otunnu of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) contesting for the presidency. However, this year, Mao decided to support President Museveni while also running for the MP seat in Laroo-Pece division. Meanwhile, the UPC’s Jimmy Akena faced difficulties with his nomination, leaving the region without a competitive presidential candidate.

One of the key factors Olanya cited for Museveni’s success in Acholi was his initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and the promise of a cattle restocking program. These programs have resonated with voters in the region, especially those looking for tangible economic support and development opportunities.

Olanya also weighed in on the reasons behind the failure of some Members of Parliament (MPs) in the recent elections. He argued that a lack of connection with the voters was a major factor in their defeat. According to Olanya, the secret to winning elections lies in raising issues that matter to the people, both in parliament and within the community. He stressed that MPs must be close to their constituents and support them in practical ways to maintain a strong bond with the electorate.

For Olanya, it’s not just about political promises but about meaningful engagement with the community that makes a difference in the eyes of the voters.
