Mao Addresses Rumors Surrounding Speaker Seat Ambition

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has dismissed claims about his Speaker’s ambition. Mao, who is also the Democratic Party general, recently returned to elective politics after a long hiatus. His surprise candidacy for the Laroo-Pece Division Member of Parliament seat in November last year raised speculations.

Return to Politics Sparks Speculation

Mao’s decision to re-enter politics followed guidance from President Yoweri Museveni, which fueled rumors about a Speaker’s bid. Some observers linked his return to the powerful parliamentary position, especially since he had overseen discussions on the constitutional transition. Mao’s involvement in constitutional matters and his claim over amendments further ignited these speculations.

Mao Denies Speaker’s Ambition, Calls It Rumor-Mongering

However, in an address to journalists at his home in Unyama Sub-County, Gulu District, Mao clarified his stance. He stated that he had never entertained thoughts of seeking the Speaker’s position and dismissed the rumors as unfounded. Mao emphasized that the speculation was driven by “rumor-mongers” and not based on any factual intent.

A Long Political Career

Norbert Mao has a long history in Ugandan politics, having served as the Gulu City Legislator for two terms. He held the position between 1996 and 2006, followed by his role as the Gulu District LCV Chairperson from 2006 to 2011. Mao’s political journey has been marked by significant involvement in local and national governance.

Conclusion: Focused on His Current Role

Mao concluded by reiterating his focus on serving the people of Laroo-Pece Division and fulfilling his ministerial duties.
