Uganda is bracing for a temporary disruption to internet and mobile phone services following a directive by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) ordering a nationwide shutdown beginning today at 6:00 PM. The move, announced as part of heightened security measures during the election period, is expected to significantly affect public access to digital communication.

According to the directive, the shutdown will limit access to mobile internet, broadband services, SIM card-related activities, and data roaming across the country. Telecommunications operators have been instructed to comply fully, with penalties outlined for any non-compliance. The UCC says the decision is aimed at maintaining public order and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

Essential services, however, will remain operational. These include emergency response systems, critical government communications, and services deemed vital to national security and public safety. Financial institutions supporting core banking operations and health-related emergency services are also expected to continue functioning under special arrangements.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Ugandans. Business owners, particularly those dependent on online platforms, have expressed concern over potential losses and operational disruptions. Civil society groups have also raised questions about access to information and freedom of expression during the election period, urging authorities to ensure that the shutdown is strictly limited in scope and duration.

Telecommunications companies began notifying customers earlier in the day, advising them to complete essential transactions before the 6:00 PM deadline. Some operators also warned that services may take time to fully normalize once the directive is lifted.

The UCC emphasized that the shutdown is temporary and will be reviewed based on prevailing security and electoral conditions. While no specific end time has been publicly announced, authorities say services will be restored as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

As the country enters a critical political moment, many Ugandans are preparing to navigate the coming hours offline, hoping for a peaceful election period and a swift return to normal digital connectivity.
