UCC Restores Internet Access, Warns VPN Users of Direct Attacks on Devices

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced the restoration of internet access nationwide following an earlier shutdown. However, the commission stated that social media platforms remain temporarily blocked. Users attempting to access these platforms through VPNs were warned that the UCC has the capability to “attack their devices directly” and sever their connection from the network.
In a statement released on Friday, the UCC clarified that while general internet services had been reinstated, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp are still unavailable. The move is seen as part of ongoing efforts to manage access to information during sensitive periods. The commission emphasized its authority to monitor and restrict access to the network.

The UCC’s warning to VPN users is especially significant, as many Ugandans have turned to virtual private networks to bypass restrictions. A VPN allows users to mask their IP address, potentially circumventing regional blockages on internet access. However, the commission’s statement made it clear that this workaround could lead to severe consequences.
Experts in cybersecurity have raised concerns about the UCC’s direct control over users’ devices. They warn that such actions could infringe on individuals’ privacy rights and freedom of expression. Many users have expressed frustration over the continued restrictions on social media platforms, calling for a return to unrestricted access to information.
The internet shutdown and social media restrictions began earlier this week, following reports of unrest and political tension in the country. The Ugandan government has faced significant criticism from international human rights organizations for its approach to controlling online platforms during times of political unrest.
Despite the restored internet access, many remain uncertain about the future of digital freedoms in Uganda. The UCC has yet to provide a timeline for the full restoration of social media services.
As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring developments. There are increasing calls for the Ugandan government to ensure that internet freedom is upheld, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
