In Kitgum Municipality, the Women’s Association for the Physically Unimpaired (WAPU) strengthened inclusive education efforts by delivering braille materials to blind pupils.
Throughout the past week, Women’s Association for the Physically Unimpaired volunteers visited several primary schools across the municipality and distributed essential scholastic materials to visually impaired learners. Meanwhile, today marked the second-to-last day of the exercise at Kitgum Girls’ Primary School, where administrators recorded a high turnout this term.
According to the headteacher, enrollment among blind pupils has increased compared to previous academic terms in the municipality. Consequently, WAPU delivered the materials at the right time as families prepared children for the new school term.
Parents welcomed the initiative and praised WAPU for supporting learners with visual impairments across different schools. Similarly, teachers said early access to braille textbooks helps pupils adjust quickly to lessons and classroom routines.
During the distribution, a Women’s Association for the Physically Unimpaired official reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting equal access to quality education. Furthermore, the official emphasized that no child should miss learning opportunities because of a disability.
Volunteers handed braille textbooks, exercise books, and writing tools directly to pupils and their guardians. In response, several beneficiaries expressed gratitude and said the materials boosted their confidence for the term.
As the exercise concludes tomorrow, WAPU plans to reach more schools before closing the program. Ultimately, education stakeholders believe continued support will strengthen inclusive learning and improve academic performance among blind pupils.
